Summer begins: samphire, crabs and long evenings

Marsh samphire growing on the saltmarsh mud in Norfolk

Samphire on the Norfolk saltmarsh

This week

Norfolk’s schools break up for the summer today, and the coast gets busier from now until September. Inland, Hunworth stays quiet.

Cromer Hall has an evening of live music in its grounds on Saturday 18 July: bring a picnic. Cromer is about twenty-five minutes from the cottage.

The Cromer Pier Show is in its summer season at the Pavilion Theatre, at the end of the pier, until 19 September: an old-fashioned seaside variety show, and one of the last of its kind.

The season

It’s samphire season. Marsh samphire from the saltmarshes along the coast is at its best in July and August; you’ll find it on menus and at the fish stalls. Steam it and eat it with butter. Cromer crab is in season too, best dressed and eaten on the seafront. In the fields the barley harvest is starting, and the swifts are racing round the rooftops before they leave in August.

Looking ahead

  • 25 and 26 July: the Worstead Festival, sixty years old this year.
  • 31 July to 9 August: Wells Carnival.
  • 2 to 9 August: Sheringham Carnival.
  • 9 August: Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Day.
  • 12 August: a deep partial eclipse of the sun in the early evening, and the Perseid meteor shower that night.
