This week

On the coast at Brancaster Staithe, the White Horse has a Lobster and Fizz Festival from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 July. It’s about forty minutes from the cottage, looking out over the marshes.

For a day in the city, it’s the Lord Mayor’s Weekend in Norwich from 10 to 12 July, with free events across the city centre; Norwich is about forty minutes away. The Norwich History Festival begins on Tuesday 14 July.

The season

The lavender is in flower at Norfolk Lavender in Heacham, on the far side of the coast, through July. Closer to home it’s strawberry season, and the evenings are at their longest: the sun doesn’t set until after nine. Supper in the garden, then a walk down Kings Street as the light goes.

Looking ahead

  • 17 July: the schools break up for the summer.
  • 18 July: a picnic concert at Cromer Hall.
  • 22 to 26 July: the first RHS Sandringham Flower Show, at the Sandringham Estate.
  • 25 and 26 July: the Worstead Festival.
  • 31 July to 9 August: Wells Carnival.
