Small miracle: a worker’s cottage with character

The Observer’s interiors pages told the story of how Spinks Nest was brought back to life. Home to farm workers since the 19th century, it was still a single room with a tiny kitchenette when the work began. The feature follows the restoration: concrete chipped away to reveal the original flint, walls rebuilt with lime mortar and reclaimed bricks, and locally made Norfolk pamments laid on the floors. It also looks at the clever use of a small space, from the handmade kitchen in reclaimed timber to the William Morris curtains and the glossy green bathroom.

Airbnbs in the UK we really rate

Condé Nast Traveller counts Spinks Nest among the UK stays its editors really rate. They single out the colour, with rich greens and earthy tones, along with the reclaimed furniture, the exposed flint and the vintage Morris & Co curtains. Then they send you off to Holt and the coast for a bracing walk, and back for an evening in front of the wood burner.

The cosiest cottages in the UK for a winter getaway

Time Out named Spinks Nest the cosiest stay on its list of winter cottages, thanks to the underfloor heating, the sunken bath and the log burner. It also points out the footpaths that start just along the lane, the views across the Glaven Valley, The Hunworth Bell a couple of minutes away for lunch or dinner, and that your dog is welcome too.

Romantic retreats for Valentine’s Day

Homes & Antiques chose Spinks Nest as one of its romantic retreats. It explains that the name comes from an old folk word for a finch, and admires the little brick-and-flint cottage’s collection of reclaimed and vintage materials: flint and lime-rendered walls, Norfolk pamments and antique sanitaryware, with fabrics from Mulberry Home, Designers Guild and Woolroom. To finish, there’s the village pub, the coast path and Sheringham Park nearby.
