A village festival at sixty, and seals at Blakeney Point

Common seals and their young on Blakeney Point

This week

The Worstead Festival is sixty this year, on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July: one of Norfolk’s best-loved village festivals, in the old weaving village that gave worsted cloth its name, near North Walsham and about forty minutes away.

Out on Blakeney Point the common seals have their pups in summer. The boat trips from Morston, about twenty minutes from the cottage, go out to see them and the grey seals hauled out on the sandbanks. Book ahead in the holidays, and check the times: the boats go with the tide.

The season

Long, light evenings, and the time for supper outside. Spinks Nest’s garden has a table under the parasol and chairs on the gravel terrace, with the wildflower meadow beyond.

Looking ahead

  • 31 July to 9 August: Wells Carnival, with the parade on Saturday 8 August.
  • 2 to 9 August: Sheringham Carnival.
  • 9 August: Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Day.
  • 12 August: the partial solar eclipse, and the Perseids.
  • 15 to 21 August: Cromer Carnival.
