This week

In the small hours of this morning the full moon passed partly into the Earth’s shadow: about 90% of it was eclipsed at 5.12am, low in the west before dawn.

On bank holiday Monday, 31 August, the Aylsham Show fills Blickling Park: a one-day show of Norfolk farming, food and country life, about twenty-five minutes from the cottage.

Festival on Rails carries on until Monday on the Poppy Line.

The season

The schools go back next week, and September is a lovely month here: the lanes and beaches quieten, the sea is still warm, and the evenings are still long enough for supper outside.

Looking ahead

  • 5 and 6 September: the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival at Holkham.
  • 11 to 20 September: Heritage Open Days.
  • 12 and 13 September: the Sandringham Game and Country Fair.
  • 16 September: the Bayfield Hall Sculpture Trail opens, until 18 October.
  • 18 to 20 September: the Holt and Sheringham 1940s weekend.

Check dates for September.
