A food festival at Holkham, and a quieter coast

Paths and planting in the Walled Garden at Holkham Hall

The Walled Garden at Holkham Hall

This week

The North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival is on this weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, 10am to 4pm, in the Walled Garden at Holkham Hall: more than 60 producers from across the county, with meat and game, bread, cakes, beer, chocolate and more, food trucks, a cookery theatre and things for children to do. Entry is free; there’s a charge for parking and no cash machine on site, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Holkham is about half an hour from the cottage. Take a cool bag.

The season

The schools are back, and the coast is calmer: quieter beaches, easier parking, and the first pink-footed geese arriving from the north.

Looking ahead

  • 11 to 20 September: Heritage Open Days, free across Norfolk.
  • 12 and 13 September: the Sandringham Game and Country Fair.
  • 16 September to 18 October: the Bayfield Hall Sculpture Trail.
  • 18 to 20 September: Holt and Sheringham’s 1940s weekend.
  • 19 September: the last night of the Cromer Pier Show.
