This week
Festival on Rails starts tomorrow on the North Norfolk Railway and runs for ten days, to Monday 31 August: three locomotives in action every day and up to nine across the festival, among them the N2, back in service in July after a restoration costing around £800,000. There are cream tea trains and brunch on board on some days, and guided tours of the engineering works at Weybourne if you book ahead. Holt station is about ten minutes from the cottage.
Tonight, Friday 21 August, The Pantaloons perform Twelfth Night in the open air at Burnham Deepdale, at 7pm. Take a rug.
Cromer Carnival finishes today.
The season
The end of August is when the sea is at its warmest, and the beaches empty out in the evenings: a good time for a late swim at Wells or Holkham.
Looking ahead
- 28 August: a partial eclipse of the moon before dawn.
- 31 August: the bank holiday, and the Aylsham Show at Blickling.
- 5 and 6 September: the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival at Holkham.
- 11 to 20 September: Heritage Open Days.
