Cromer Carnival, and the heath in flower

Heather and gorse on Kelling Heath, with pine woods behind

Heather and gorse on Kelling Heath

This week

Cromer Carnival runs from Saturday 15 to Friday 21 August, with Carnival Day and the parade on Wednesday 19 August. Cromer is about twenty-five minutes from the cottage; on parade day, go early.

The Cromer Pier Show has another month to run, until 19 September.

The season

The heather is out on Kelling Heath, ten minutes away: a sweep of purple between the pines, with views out to sea. It’s good walking, and dogs love it. In the lanes the first blackberries are ripening.

Looking ahead

  • 21 August: Twelfth Night, open-air Shakespeare at Burnham Deepdale.
  • 22 to 31 August: Festival on Rails on the Poppy Line.
  • 28 August: a partial eclipse of the moon, early in the morning.
  • 31 August: the Aylsham Show at Blickling.
  • 5 and 6 September: the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival at Holkham.
