Apples, mussels, and the woods turning

Mussels being unloaded from small boats at Brancaster Staithe

Unloading mussels at Brancaster Staithe

October, and the start of the best months for walking and eating in North Norfolk.

This week

Apple Day at Gressenhall is on Sunday 4 October, 10am to 4pm. Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, near Dereham, has held its Apple Day for more than thirty years; it’s about half an hour’s drive south of the cottage.

Brancaster mussels are back in season from Saturday 3 October, and stay in season through the winter. Look out for them on menus along the coast; our favourite places to eat are in the local guide.

Closer to home, Letheringsett Watermill, just west of Holt on the Glaven, is the last working watermill in Norfolk and still grinds flour. Good bread starts there.

The season

The woods are starting to turn, and the next few weeks are the best of the year for the Pippin’s Heath walk, straight from the door: down Kings Street, up the old lane through Hunworth Common, and round through the plantation and back down to the river. Wear boots: the lane is muddy, and there’s a ford. It’s fungus season, too: look, photograph, and leave them where they grow.

Looking ahead

  • Mid October: the geese building on the coast at dawn and dusk.
  • 17 and 18 October: the last weekend of the Bayfield Hall Sculpture Trail.
  • 24 and 25 October: the Autumn Steam Gala, with Britain’s oldest working steam locomotive.
  • Late October: the grey seals begin pupping on Blakeney Point.
