The equinox has been and gone, and the evenings are drawing in. Here’s the week around Hunworth.
This week
The Harvest Moon is full on Saturday 26 September, at 5.49pm, and will look full from Friday night to Sunday. It’s the name for the full moon nearest the autumn equinox, and this year it falls in September. For a big sky away from streetlights, Wiveton Downs, above Glandford and about fifteen minutes from the cottage, is a Dark Sky Discovery Site: one of the first two on the Norfolk coast, and on a clear, moonless night dark enough to see the Milky Way.
Deepdale Festival is on from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September at Burnham Deepdale, with evenings of live music on the coast. It’s the festival’s eighth year.
The Bayfield Hall Sculpture Trail carries on, Wednesday to Sunday until 18 October.
The season
This is when the woodburner comes into its own. Spinks Nest’s sits in a brick inglenook against the old flint wall, with deep leather armchairs drawn up to it: come back from the coast, light the fire and stay put. Firewood is available as an extra; just ask when you book.
Out in the fields the sugar beet harvest is starting, and the pink-footed geese follow it, feeding on what the harvesters leave behind.
Looking ahead
- From early October: Brancaster mussels back in season.
- 4 October: Apple Day at Gressenhall.
- October: the fallow deer rut in Holkham’s park.
- 24 and 25 October: the Autumn Steam Gala on the Poppy Line.
